The Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster "Avatar" continued to dominate the Russian box office five weeks after its release, local media reported Tuesday.
The tale of big, blue aliens in conflict with rapacious humans on Pandora that helped James Cameron win best director and best picture at Sunday's Golden Globes, raked in 132.49 million rubles (4.47 million U.S. dollars) over the weekend, said the RIA Novosti news agency.
Since opening on Dec. 17, 2009, Avatar has grossed 2.53 billion rubles (84 million dollars) in Russia.
As of Monday, the global box office of Avatar has exceeded 1.62 billion dollars, with its foreign box office over 1.1 billion dollars, according to statistics by the Box Office Mojo website.
The newly released U.S. comedy "It's Complicated" starring Meryl Streep was second with 36.51 million rubles (4.47 million dollars). "Sherlock Holmes" starring Robert Downey Jr. came in third.
