The Taiwan film "Monga" directed by Doze Niu has applied to compete for the Best Foreign Language Film title at the 83rd Academy Awards next February, Sohu.com reports.
Before "Monga," the romantic film "Hear Me" featuring Peng Yu-yen was to represent Taiwan films vying for an Oscar this year. But 'Hear Me" was excluded as the release date was August 2009, two months earlier than the official release date of October 1, 2009, to compete for an Oscar.
Taiwan film officials said "Monga" was chosen because the spirit of the film is recognized by local audiences, and it has grossed NTD200 million (about US$6 million) at box offices on the island.
While "Monga" has bowled over audiences in Taiwan, its graphic violence and portrayal of gangsters have prevented it from being shown on the Chinese mainland.
