(L to R): Shang Wenjie, Lady Gaga and Sun Yue. |
Lady Gaga is the biggest pop star of the day, a mercurial talent lurking beneath an orgy of mirrored balls, bubble clusters, vinyl curtains and sticky lace.
Gaga lookalike competitions have been drawing hundreds of imitators dancing to Poker Face and Bad Romance. Shang Wenjie, winner of the talent show Happy Girl in 2006, appeared with a UFO-like hairstyle and pink eyeshades, in drastic contrast to her former innocent image, saying Lady Gaga was her idol, and she didn't care a hoot what people said. Singer Sun Yue, has been dubbed the second "Fake Gaga" after Shang. Others who have flattered the Lady by imitation include actress Vicky Zhao and Hong Kong pop starlet Gillian Chung. The Gaga craze marks a new high in American pop's influence on Chinese showbiz.
