Hong Kong stocks went up 56.39 points, or 0.25 percent, to open at 23,000.37 on Tuesday.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index was down 105.07 points, or 0.46 percent, at 22,838.91 shortly after the market opened.
Banking giant HSBC was up 0.93 percent at 98.00 HK dollars, and China Mobile, the leading carrier on the Chinese mainland, was up 0.74 percent at 76.65 HK dollars.
