A?girl in east China committed suicide because her hair length didn't follow the school dress code even after three haircuts in a month.
The 13-year-old, surnamed Zhang, drank a whole bottle of pesticide at her home last Saturday after she was not allowed to enter the school even though she had already had three haircuts to meet the rigid rules, Shandong Business Daily reported yesterday.
She was a seventh-grader in Linyi City's No. 6 Middle School in east China's Shandong Province.
The girl once asked the class teacher what kind of hair style was the standard, but the answer was vague, saying hers didn't follow the rules. Her father said the girl's hair was shorter than that of many others in the school.
The devastated parents set up the girl's memorial hall in front of the school gate on Monday in hopes of confronting the school headmaster and teachers. But the school hasn't made any response, the report said.
Zhou Maolong, the girl's class teacher, sent a sole text message on Saturday evening asking about her condition. After that, Zhou disappeared and his cell phone was turned off, the father said.
Zhang ran away from home in September after Zhou kicked her and another student out of the classroom for wearing long hair. Her father found her in a supermarket and took her to have the first haircut.
She got a second haircut during the National Day holiday after her hair was again deemed too long. She told her mother she asked the teacher what the standard was and the teacher beat her.
Zhang was rejected by the school again last Saturday after her third haircut.
Her hair was above the jaw line and her bangs were above her eyebrows, making her hair shorter than that of many others in the school, according to her father.
