Sixteen people died on the way home from a wedding banquet when their vehicle was involved in a collision with a truck in east China's Shandong Province, police said Saturday.
The accident happened at about 7 p.m. Thursday on the Shenxian section of Provincial Road S333, where the truck carrying gravel and a three-wheeled farm vehicle carrying 22 people collided, the police said in a statement.
Two people died at the scene, while 20 injured were taken to hospital, where 14 of them later died, said doctors.
The remaining six, including two children, are reported to be stable.
The police statement said the driver of the truck fled after the accident.
The farm vehicle was carrying home 21 people from a wedding banquet and the driver, who was also killed in the accident, was suspected of drink-driving, said the police statement.
