Local anti-corruption chief suspended after official dies during interrogation

The chief of an anti-corruption bureau in central China's Hubei Province was suspended Tuesday following the death of a people's congress deputy, local authorities said.
Zeng Zhengping, director of the Bureau of Corruption Prevention in Badong County under Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, was suspended from his post following Ran Jianxin's death and is under investigation, said a statement released Tuesday by the prefecture.
Ran, 49, died Saturday while being interrogated.
Ran, a people's congress deputy in the city of Lichuan and a former Party chief and director of the Duting Street Office in Lichuan, was arrested on May 26 on charges of taking bribes from construction contractors.
Ran's cousin said he found signs of wounds and bruises on Ran's body at the hospital and believed that they were signs of an "unnatural death."
Hubei's provincial procuratorate on Sunday sent an investigative team to Badong and is waiting for autopsy results.
Several of Zeng's subordinates were also suspended and are under investigation as well, according to the statement.
The investigative team has vowed to "find out the truth" and said that anyone who has been found to have violated laws during the interrogation will not be shielded by the team.
