Because of the seriousness of her wounds and her sustained blood loss, doctors had to amputate her left leg. They said if she had been brought in earlier, it could have been saved. But while Wen lost her leg in that tragic accident, she gained the respect of the country and became a hero in the hearts and minds of the Chinese.
"I don't regret doing this for my tourists at all," she said. "I just did my duty."
After the accident, Wen appeared in a local tour guide contest in her wheelchair. She received thunderous applause from the audience, some of whom even had tears in their eyes. But Wen has never cried or complained about any pain or her situation since the accident. Instead, she always wears a sweet smile on her face.
"Crying will only make others feel more pain than I do," she said.
