Chen Guiyun, Deputy of the National People's Congress (NPC) and Assistant President at Southwest University, proposed during a group discussion to extend the May Day holiday to one week, the Chongqing Evening News reports.
Among China's three "golden weeks" - the May Day, National Day and Spring Festival holidays -- only the May Day holiday had been shortened from seven days to three days in 2008.
"May Day holidays and National Day holidays, respectively, in the first and second half of a year belong to different seasons," Chen told the newspaper. "If both of them are seven-day-long holidays, it will help boost tourism and stimulate domestic consumption."
Chen also said the current Spring Festival holiday is too short for Chinese people's family reunions and should be extended by two days.
