"The Xining local government plans to speed up the restructuring and transformation of the city's growth pattern in order to promote economic development in 2010. The city is making hefty investments to improve people's livelihoods," Xining Mayor Mao Xiaobing told China.org.cn on the sideline of the annual parliamentary meeting in Beijing on March 5-14.
Located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in western China, Xining is the capital and also the economic center of Qinghai Province. Mao hopes to make use of local resources to develop its unique animal and plant industries. City officials also want to facilitate the development of Xining's emerging high-tech industries.
To entice low-end industries from coastal regions to relocate, the Xining local government has built a high-tech industrial park, covering 23.5 square kilometers. "We will upgrade infrastructure, public services and support facilities to accommodate large-scale industrial transfers from developed areas," Mao said.
"Xining's population of more than 2 million accounts for 37 percent of the whole population of Qinghai Province. We hope we can achieve the goal of fast economic development and improve people's livelihoods. Xining is a very beautiful city, and I welcome world to visit my home."
