In recent years, marine economy has become a promising "blue engine" that promotes economic development in China. The district of Nanhai, in Weihai, is seizing this opportunity to build itself into a new highland in the development of marine economy in Shandong peninsula.
Over the past decades, investments totaling 7 billion yuan have gone to improving infrastructure, including the construction of a network of trunk roads extending 280 kilometers, a water diversion project with a daily supply capacity of 50 thousand cubic meters, a natural gas supply project with a daily capacity of 250 thousand cubic meters, a sewage treatment plant with a daily sewage treatment capacity of 50 thousand tons, three "35,000 voltage to 220,000 voltage" transformer substations, as well as two central heating bases.
So far 15 companies that either rank among the Global Top 500, or the China Top 500, or have gone public, have set up operations in Nanhai District. Work on over 90 blue-industry projects, each with an investment of over 100 billion yuan, has been started; and seven industries including marine new energy, marine advanced equipment manufacturing, and marine biopharmaceutics, have initially taken shape.
"It (Nanhai District) will soon become a hot land for the development of Shandong peninsula and the country's marine economy", said an official from the administration committee of the Nanhai District.
