900-Year-Old
Sewer Still in Use

????A recent guided
tour of historic Ganzhou in east China's Jiangxi Province led
sightseers to one of the city's more unusual scenic spots: a 900-year-old
sewer still in use.
????The sewer, built during the Northern Song
Dynasty (960-1127), now serves 300,000 residents in the city.
It lies about two meters below ground and covers three square
kilometers.
????The ancient drainage system is able to handle
heavy rains without backing up, said a local resident, adding
that the secret of the system has never been determined.
????Ganzhou, a well-preserved city of the Song
Dynasty (960-1279), has over 300 ancient structures, ruins and
scenic spots. It has been called a "museum of the Song Dynasty."
