Premier Looks for Stronger Cambodia Ties

Premier Wen Jiabao presented an outline of tentative ideas for further development of Sino-Cambodian relations during his meeting with visiting Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday.

Wen suggested holding frequent high-level meetings to form a solid basis for expansion of political relations; expanding economic and trade ties in such areas as infrastructure, telecommunications, agriculture and resource exploration; increasing exchanges in other fields, such as culture, education and sports; and strengthening cooperation in regional agreements, associations and projects, such as ASEAN and work in the Mekong River area.

The two leaders also witnessed the signing of 10 accords relating to bilateral cooperation in various fields.

Hun Sen spoke highly of the two countries' relationship, noting that China's development will benefit neighboring countries in the Mekong River area as well as its own people.

He reaffirmed that strengthening friendly relations with China is a priority in Cambodia's foreign relations policy.

Hun Sen arrived in Shanghai on Monday for a week-long visit to China. He will make stops in Hubei Province and the city of Chongqing before going to Hainan Province on April 24 and 25 to attend the Boao Forum for Asia before returning home.

Hun Sen is leading a delegation of 50-plus government and business representatives.

Among the top officials are Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hor Namhong, Defense Minister Tea Banh and Senior Minister Sok An.

Hun Sen's visit closely follows last month's four-nation tour by Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi, which saw nine agreements signed with Cambodia aimed at boosting trade from US$320 million to US$500 million by next year.

Hor Namhong told reporters before departing that four Chinese companies will also be signing contracts to invest in Cambodia during the visit.
