Chengdu’s Per-Capita Vegetable Consumption Exceeds World Average

Last year, the per-capita consumption of vegetables of Chengdu, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, reached 126 kg, 24 kg more than the world’s average of 102 kg.

The fact indicates that a great change is taking place in the living standard of Chengdu residents, with the result they tend to pay closer attention to the rational intake of different foods with different nutrition. The ratio of grain to food consumption has dropped, while that of vegetables has been growing rapidly.

According to a survey, the ratio of grain to food spending by local residents fell to 6.4 percent in 2000 from 6.77 percent in 1999. Yet that of vegetables rose to 9.64 percent in 2000 from 8.83 percent in 1999.

Greater acreage planted to vegetables and the availability of green vegetables has given a boost to vegetable consumption.
