Ma Youyou to Show Chinese Traditional Music

Starting from Beijing, the world famous cellist Ma Youyou (Yo-Yo Ma in English) will soon lead his "Silk Road Concert Troupe" to fulfill his splendid "Silk Road Program", a well-schemed endeavor for digging and sorting out national folk music.

The "Silk Road Program" will be a large-scale and trans-regional work and the first of its kind in the world as well though a number of musicians had long been engaged in tapping for the folk arts heritage since the beginning of last century, commented the Shanghai-based Wen Hui Daily.

Wu Tong, a Chinese musician and a reed-pipe performer is also listed a member of the troupe. He said that the main theme of the program is meant to present to the world the Chinese music with traditional musical instruments and in modern musical forms. The Program has drawn an extensive attention from among the people of the musical circle thanks to the reputation of Ma Youyou in the world, added Wu.

"Ma Youyou's 'Silk Road Program'" has nothing to do with making money, however, it's sure that it will be recorded forever in history. I am pleased to travel with him on the "Silk Road", said Wu.

A Harvard graduate born on October 7, 1955, Ma Youyou (Yo-Yo Ma) made his initial impact performing J.S. Bach's Suites for Unaccompanied Cello, which he also recorded early on in his career. The Cellist has gained international recognition as soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. He has performed as soloist with symphony orchestras around the world, including those of Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Toronto, and Minnesota, as well as the New York, Israel, and Los Angeles Philharmonics. He also performed the music of Astor Piazzolla for the soundtrack of the Sally Potter film The Tango Lesson, and explored native Chinese music as well as the music of the Kalahari bush people of Africa.
