The spirit of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway builders
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway extends 1,956 km from Xining in Qinghai Province to Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The construction was conducted in two phases: the Xining-Golmud section was completed in 1984 and the Golmud-Lhasa section was completed in 2006. It is the world’s longest plateau railway at the highest altitude, and also the most challenging construction project in railroad history. Its completion hinged on China’s economic and technological strengths, and the powerful moral support of numerous workers.
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway builders were inspired by a courageous will to challenge their own physical and mental limits and build a plateau railway of the best possible quality. To this end, the engineers tackled such problems as permafrost, shortage of oxygen in the alpine regions, and a vulnerable eco-environment – three problems as tough as any faced by railroad engineers anywhere in the world.

青藏鐵路自青海西寧至西藏拉薩全長1956公里,包括西寧至格爾木和格爾木至拉薩兩段。青藏鐵路格拉段是世界上海拔最高、線路最長的高原鐵路,是世界鐵路建設(shè)史上最具挑戰(zhàn)性的工程項目。修建這樣的鐵路,不僅需要雄厚的經(jīng)濟實力和強大的科技實力作基礎(chǔ),同時需要強大的精神支柱作支撐。
青藏鐵路精神的主要內(nèi)涵是“挑戰(zhàn)極限、勇創(chuàng)一流”?!疤魬?zhàn)極限”概括了廣大青藏鐵路建設(shè)者在“生命禁區(qū)”,以不畏艱險的英雄氣概和求真務(wù)實的科學態(tài)度,挑戰(zhàn)生理心理極限,攻克“多年凍土、高寒缺氧、生態(tài)脆弱”三大世界性工程難題的卓絕表現(xiàn);“勇創(chuàng)一流”概括了廣大建設(shè)者以敢于超越前人的大智大勇,建設(shè)世界一流高原凍土鐵路,拼搏奮斗,開拓創(chuàng)新,攀登不止的崇高精神。
