The spirit of combating the flood of 1998
In the summer of 1998, devastating floods inundated many of the regions south of the Yangtze River, as well as parts of northeast China. Twenty-nine provinces and provincial-level administrative regions were afflicted by the disaster.
The whole nation united as one in the fight against this natural calamity, demonstrating a spirit of resilience and courage.
The essence of this spirit is a readiness to sacrifice one's life for the country and to regard the interests of the people and the nation of vital importance, a commitment to socialist unity and cooperation that ensures that "when one place is in trouble, assistance will come from all quarters," a heroism that braves hardships and dangers in pursuit of victory, and the Chinese tradition of pulling together in times of trouble.
