Hanshan Temple and Hanshan Temple Culture Forum
The Hanshan Temple in Suzhou of Jiangsu Province was built during the reign of Emperor Wu (464-549, r. 502-549) of the Liang Dynasty (502-557), and it was originally named "Miaoli Puming Temple." Allegedly, it was renamed "Hanshan Temple" during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong (685-762, r. 712-756) of the Tang Dynasty, and "Fengqiao Temple" in the Song Dynasty, and reverted to "Hanshan Temple" during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). The temple is an important landmark for carrying forward Hehe Culture. It has stone-carved picture of Han Shan and Shi De, and other relics of the Two Immortals, as well as such inscriptions as A Night Mooring by Maple Bridge and Foreword to Han Shan's Poems by Emperor Yongzheng.
There are 10 central research directions of Hanshan Temple culture, including the cultures of Zen, Hehe, historical stories, bell music, poetry, art, openness, education, charity, and the environment. In 2007, the First Hanshan Temple Culture Forum was held at the Hanshan Temple, with the aim of promoting Hehe Culture. Thereafter, Hanshan Temple has held the forum and published The Hanshan Temple Culture Forum Proceedings on a yearly basis, thereby making significant contributions to the spread and promotion of Hehe Culture.
