Mexican President Vicente Fox on Wednesday expressed his country's firm belief in the UN, and called for concerted efforts to carry out the reform of the world body.
Addressing the UN summit that opened on Wednesday, Fox said the future of the UN now demands a renewed commitment among its member states to the principles and values that inspired its creation.
"Making sure that our organization remains as the best means to attain international peace, security and development…. It demands unity amongst diversity, which has been, is and will be, our greatest hope," the president said.
The Outcome Document the 60th UN General Assembly will adopt on Friday already contains many of the elements that will pave the way toward the comprehensive reform of the UN, he said.
However, despite some progress, the president said, member states are still divided over some essential issues, such as disarmament, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction.
The president also talked about the issues of world security and development during his speech. He agreed with the UN concept that security is not possible, if socio-economic development and respect for human rights are not achieved.
