31. How has the scientific world approached HPAI?

There is a long history of human research into avian influenza. So far the world as a whole has witnessed more than ten large-scale pandemics of avian influenza since 1878 when it was first recognized. The current HPAI epidemic is not due to a new virus. Outbreaks of H5N1- and H7N7-based HPAI have been reported in various countries and regions over the past few years.

Effective approaches to the containment of bird flu have been made available through many years of scientific study and research. Since epidemiological investigations indicate that avian influenza spreads by horizontal transmission, its spread and epidemic can be contained once its channels for transmission are cut off.

Because of its sensitivity to high temperatures the virus can be rendered safe by exposure to temperatures of 60-70 degrees C for 2-10 minutes. Therefore, people need not be concerned about enjoying properly-cooked poultry meat, eggs and other products. There is no reason to panic.
