PM: Serbia not to trade Kosovo for EU membership
Adjust font size:

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica attends a government session in Belgrade, Serbia, on Thursday, February 14, 2008.

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said on Friday that Serbia will not join the European Union through undignified trading, the official Tanjug news agency reported.

"Serbia has always been in Europe and therefore nobody can either bring it in or take it out, and Serbia should join the European Union as a whole, in the same way as all other members entered this union," Kostunica said, addressing the statehood Day and Army Day celebrations at Orasac of central Serbia.

Serbia was requested to "sit at the table of the European family" as the only state which got its seat through undignified trading and by sacrificing its memories and identity, he said, adding that "Serbia can never agree to this."

The Prime Minister called for unity of political leader and state officials at the time when Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity are violated.

"This is perhaps the only question where differences must not exist," he said.

Kostunica's cabinet adopted on Thursday a resolution to annul a unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo.

It is widely believed that the Kosovo parliament will adopt a statement of intent to proclaim independence on Sunday.
