China is a steadfast keeper of world peace and regional stability and its development will not pose a threat to any other country, says an editorial carried by Thursday's People's Daily.
The editorial is published on August 1, the Army Day, to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).
"China is concentrating on modernization and needs a long-term peaceful international environment, especially a sound environment in its neighborhood," it says. "Even after China becomes a developed country, it would never pursue hegemonism."
The editorial reviews the history of the PLA and urges the army to adhere to the leadership of the Communist Party of China(CPC).
"History has shown the leadership of the CPC has been and will forever be fundamental to the growth of the army," it stresses.
"So long as we steadfastly adhere to the absolute leadership of the Party, our army will continue to make new progress and contributions to our nation," it says.
It adds that in the new millennium, the "Three Represents" thought of the Party must be made the guiding ideology of the PLA."The thought is an important guarantee to continuing the glory and maintaining the orientation of the PLA."
The "Three Represents" thought, a Party building theory put forward by Chinese President Jiang Zemin, outlines how the CPC must represent the requirement to develop advanced productive forces, an orientation towards advanced culture, and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people in China.
