Over 2,500 Foreigners Killed or Missing in Asian Tsunamis

More than 2,500 foreigners were reportedly killed or missing in Sunday's tsunamis triggered by a strong earthquake in the Indian Ocean.

 

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 8.7 according to the China Seismological Bureau, hit at 6:58 am (0058 GMT) Sunday off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, destroying villages and flooding cities. The death toll has risen over 55,000people.

 

The following is a list of foreigners killed or reported missing so far in the disaster:

 

Argentina:

Two Argentineans were reported missing in Thailand, said Argentine ambassador to Thailand.

 

Australia:

Six Australians were confirmed dead in the tsunamis, said Australian Foreign Ministry spokesman. Another 10 went missing in Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.

 

Austria:

Five Austrians were reported dead, and more than 20 were missing.

 

Belgium:

Two Belgian tourists died and 30 others missing, said the Belgian Foreign Ministry.

 

Brazil:

Two Brazilians were killed by tidal waves.

 

Britain:

18 Britons were reportedly killed.

 

Canada:

Three were reported dead.

 

Chile:

Seven Chilean people were missing, said the Chilean Foreign Ministry.

 

China:

One person from Chinese Taipei was reportedly killed and one from Hong Kong found dead with 43 still missing.

 

Colombia:

A baby girl was killed in Malaysia during a vacation with her family.

 

Croatia:

One person was dead.

 

The Czech Republic:

About 224 were reported missing.

 

Denmark:

At least three Danish people died and 214 others missing.

 

Finland:

One woman was confirmed dead, and 200 people were missing.

 

France:

Ten French people were killed and 18 others missing.

 

Germany:

Four German tourists were identified dead by Sri Lankan authorities, but German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer told a press conference that the government won't give details on possible deaths among German tourists until the information from the catastrophe regions is confirmed.

 

About 100 tourists are still missing in disaster region, he said. Some travel agencies still can't build contacts with hundreds of tourists. The number of missing Germans could be "three-digital."

 

An identification team of the Federal Criminal Bureau has been sent to the Khao Lak region in Thailand for investigation of victims, said the minister.

 

Israel:

About 188 Israelis went missing.

 

Italy:

At least 13 Italians died, and dozens of people were injured and over a hundred missing, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Gianfranco Fini told a press conference on Monday. Most of them are tourists.

 

Italian official statistics showed that nearly 5,000 nationals were in the affected areas when the catastrophe occurred.

 

Japan:

Nine were reportedly killed.

 

Mexico:

Four people were reported missing in Thailand, Mexican radio quoted Julian Ventura, Foreign Ministry's general-director for Asia Pacific, as reporting on Tuesday.

 

The Netherlands:

Three Dutch people were confirmed dead.

 

New Zealand:

One was reportedly killed..

 

Norway:

13 Norwegians died in Asia's tidal wave disaster, with 11 deaths in Thailand and two in Sri Lanka, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reported on Tuesday.

 

Up to 200 Norwegians still have not been accounted for, but communications are down in many areas, according to the latest figures from the Department of Foreign Affairs.

 

On Tuesday morning, two Norwegian children were found alive and have been reunited with their families.

 

Around 50 Norwegians are registered as patients at several hospitals in the Phuket region in Thailand, NRK reported.

 

Poland:

Four Polish people were killed and 43 missing.

 

Portugal:

Five Portuguese were missing, said the Portuguese Foreign Ministry. Ten people were being treated in Thai hospitals.

 

Among the 210 Portuguese in the affected area, 168 have been found, said the ministry.

 

Romania:

Two Romanian tourists were missing, said the travel agencies.

 

Russia:

Four Russian tourists were missing in Thailand, said Russia's Association of Tour Operators.

 

Singapore:

Two people died.

 

South Africa:

Four South African people were reportedly killed and 12 others were missing.

 

South Korea:

41 were reportedly dead and 17 missing.

 

Sweden:

Six Swedes were confirmed dead and around 1,500 remained missing in Thailand. Swedish Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds has called the disaster in Asia a "national trauma" for Sweden, Radio Sweden reported on Tuesday.

 

Foreign Ministry State Secretary Hans Dahlgren said, "There is reason to fear that the final number of (Swedish) deaths will be very high."

 

Approximately 20,000 to 30,000 Swedes are estimated to have been in the region affected by the disaster.

 

Switzerland:

Nine people were reportedly killed.

 

Turkey:

26 Turkish people were missing, said the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

 

The United States:

At least 11 US people were killed.
