A freezing cold weather swept through Russia's Far East on Monday, resulting in a sharp drop of temperatures in the northern area of the region.
According to local weather forecasts, the night temperature at the northern Kolymskaya would fall to minus 52 degrees Celsius, while temperature of the Yakutsk at night would even be minus 55 degrees Celsius. The severe cold weather was expected to last for days.
At Oymyakon near the North Pole, Monday's night temperature would tumble down to minus 55.6 degrees Celsius.
Average temperature of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast, the Amur Oblast, the Primorye Territory and the Khabarovsk Territory would also fall to 40 degrees below zero Celsius.
Vladivostok, regional capital of the Primorye Territory, has so far kept intact from the harsh chill. As of 23:00 local time (1300 GMT) on Monday, the outdoor temperature remained at minus 10 degrees Celsius.
