SW China City sees first panda cub born this year

Southwest China's Chengdu City, capital of Sichuan Province, has seen its first giant panda cub born this year, a spokesperson with Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding said Friday.
The male cub was born about 7:57 p.m. Thursday, weighing 108 grams, at Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
Jiaozi, the cub's mother, is 15 years old and is now a mother of six.Jiaozi had her first baby in 2001.
Giant pandas are among the world's most endangered species. According to the State Forestry Administration, about 1,590 pandas live in the wild, mostly in the mountains of Sichuan, while more than 210 live in captivity.
The 200-hectare Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, founded in 1987, is home to 87 giant pandas.
