The regional office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) Monday presented a regional map on the environment of Latin America.
The "Atlas of an environment in transformation," presented by UNEP representative, Silvia Giada, highlights climate changes in the region in recent years.
"The document reflects changes in the region, deforestation, ecosystem degradation, and growth of the population," she said.
Giada said this map also showed the melting of glaciers in some regions of Latin America caused by global warming, which was illustrated through satellite images.
The map details 65 specific cases, showing changes in agricultural areas as well as ecological decline in some of the coastal areas. It also has photos to reflect the transformation of water systems.
Given this worldwide challenge, the UNEP recommends governments implement sustainable development programs based on the changing environment.
