Shell UK Limited on Saturday confirmed an oil leak in a field, 180 kilometers east of Aberdeen, Scotland.
It said in a statement that the oil leak in North Sea is in a flow line to the Gannet Alpha platform, which is operated by Shell UK Limited on behalf of itself and Esso Exploration and Production UK Limited.
The size of the sea surface affected is estimated to be over 130 square kilometers and the sheen is currently moving west from the field.
Shell said the leak is under control since the subsea well was shut on Wednesday, and the flowline on the seabed is now isolated and depressurized.
The company's current expectation is that the leaked oil will be naturally dispersed through wave action and will not reach shore.
Personnel on the platform are safe and the platform continues to operate, according to the statement.
