More dairy as a child prolongs life, a study says
Adjust font size:

Drinking milk and consuming dairy produce from an early age may result in a longer life an new study suggests. Researchers in Britain and Australia say that of those they studied, the consumption of a calcium rich diet played an important part in protecting against strokes and other causes of death.

Researchers traced 4,374 British children who had taken part in a 1930s study and found that those who had indulged in a high dairy and calcium diet were generally more healthy. The study suggests that a daily consumption of 300 ml of milk, containing around 400 mg of calcium, could cut the chance of dying from a stroke by as much as 60 percent.

The researchers said that although dairy products were high in cholesterol, high consumption did not lead to increased risks of heart disease. And there was also evidence to show a high calcium diet was good for an individual blood pressure.

The study was carried out by researchers from Britain's University of Bristol and Australia's Queensland Institute of Medical Research who say that a hormone called Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) might be an influencing factor on circulation and the heart. Adults showing high circulating levels of IGF-1 have been shown to have a lower instance of heart disease and heart failure.

While the study has revealed some positive aspects as regards the consumption of dairy product, the Stroke Association in Britain said that more studies need to be done. In addition it advised everyone to adopt a balanced diet, rich in fruit and vegetables, and low in saturated fats, salt and sugar. The association also suggests opting for low fat dairy products to reduce the saturated fat intake.

The authors of the study have also added caution to the findings saying that income levels and occupations may also be a factor.
