Mexico's hotel occupancy rising as flu fear recedes
Adjust font size:

Mexico's hotels are showing double digit rebounds in occupancy rates, as fear about the new A/H1N1 flu recedes, Tourism Minister Rodolfo Elizondo told a legislative forum on Tuesday.

Hotels in Quintana Roo currently have nearly 50 percent occupancy rates, up from 20 percent in recent months, and those in Mexico City, the worst hit region, are now about 38 percent full, up from the 10 percent in May, said Elizondo.

Mexico's tourism industry was heavily hit by the unexpected, powerful A/H1N1 flu virus which swept the country in the past few months, killing 113 people and driving away tourists. Hotels at Mexico's famous resorts were almost empty.

To save the industry, the third largest one in the country, the Mexican government and tourism companies have launched a series of campaigns and given price discounts to revive tourism.
