Most Americans oppose to close Guantanamo prison
Adjust font size:

Most Americans are opposed to shutting down the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and moving prisoners there to detention centers on U.S. soil, a new poll shows.

A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll released in Washington Tuesday finds that those surveyed oppose the closing of Guantanamo by more than 2-1.

By more than 3-1, poll respondents oppose moving the detainees to prisons within U.S. soil

Sixty-five percent of Americans polled said they do not support closing Guantanamo and sending its detainees to U.S. prisons while just 32 percent said they did support the idea.

President Barack Obama signed an executive order in January to close the prison within one year but he is facing a number of legal and political problems during the process.

The poll surveyed 1,015 adults nationwide by phone May 29- 31.
