According to a report released Saturday by the Ministry of Health (MOH), roughly 10 percent of swimming pools have unsafe levels of urea and residual chlorine, the
Beijing Times reported.
The MOH report revealed that only 90.8 percent swimming pools had an acceptable urea index with 83.7 percent having an acceptable residual chlorine index.
The high urea content is due to the ineffective cleaning and recycling of water.
Some swimming pools do not install or operate the recycling cleaning and sterilization facility, and depend instead on randomly cleaning the pool with disinfectants, which does not guarantee that cleaning is thorough or regular.
