Chinese islands up for development

Owning a private island surpasses most people's dreams except for the super rich. In some parts of the world, the upper echelons of society get to enjoy isolated beaches and beautiful landscapes all to themselves.

Making such a purchase is not only a sign of the wealthy, but can also be seen as a lifestyle choice. Here, we get a bird's eye view of some of the world's most luxurious private islands, found in Europe, the Caribbean and Southeast Asia.

And now in China. As the State Oceanic Administration has released its first list of uninhabited islands available for purchase and development which some believe could pave the way to having your very own private Chinese island.

Having an island of your own is no longer a dream for the Chinese. Over 170 islands in the country are now labeled "for sale".

Many Chinese, including Mr. Wang are enthusiastic.

Mr. Wang, Island purchasing program enthusiast, said, "I made some phone calls to the local government and consulted about the program. I want to know how much money I need to pay for each island and also whether I can make a profit from the island."

But so far he's not sure what he would do with his island-to-be.

Mr. Wang said, "I think it is the idea of owning your private island that really attracts me. But so far I have no idea of what to do with the island."

Facing impetuous enthusiasts, officials suggests they think things over before making the deal.

Yuan Shengming, Vice Director of Zhejiang Prov. Ocean & Fishery Admin, said, "I think the first and the most important step for them is to know the situation of the island, especially what you're going to do with the island. And the government will also examine their plan to see whether it goes with the overall development of the city."

China has published the first list of uninhabited islands available for purchase and development. Island owners can develop sectors ranging from tourism and manufacturing to fishing and construction, by securing development and utilization rights for a maximum of 50 years. The islands are also open to foreign enterprises - their applications require State Council approval.
