U.S. military officials made compensation payments of about $50,000 per victim to relatives of at least 16 people killed during the March 11 shooting rampage, Bloomberg reported.
U.S. officers met relatives of those killed and injured in the attack, as well as local tribal leaders.
"The compensation was on behalf of the American government and was meant to ease the anger of these victims and encourage them not to take any violent action," said Agha Lalai Dastgiri, an elder from one of the two villages hit in the attack.
