Photos published Wednesday show U.S. troops posing with the maimed bodies of suspected Afghan insurgents, Reuters reported.
In one of the pictures, a U.S. paratrooper posed next to an unofficial patch placed beside a body that read "Zombie Hunter," while in another photo, soldiers, posing with Afghan police, held the severed legs of an insurgent bomber. A further photo shows two soldiers holding a dead insurgent's hand with the middle finger raised.
The incident dealt another blow to already tense U.S. and NATO ties with Afghanistan. U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta apologized on Wednesday for the latest incident "on behalf of the Department of Defense and the U.S. government", saying "that behavior is unacceptable."
