Andy Roddick, the 10th seed at Shanghai Masters, retired from the tournament during his second-round encounter against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez from Spain on Wednesday.
Roddick, who was fighting for his chance of the London ATP Finals, ended the first set 6-3. However, when trailing 2-3 in the second set, the world number eleven informed the judge that he was unable to continue the match, sending his opponent to the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters.
The 28-year-old American harvested an easy victory the day before, coming to Wednesday due to the injury drop-out of Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber.
