Croatian striker Ivica Olic will be sidelined for six months as the Bayren Munich player undergoes a knee operation in the United States.
The Bundesliga club announced on its website on Monday that they have decided to send Olic to the U.S. for an operation carried out by knee injury specialist Richard Steadman.
Olic sustained the injury playing for his country in a friendly international against Slovakia on August 12 and has since struggled.
"I am really disappointed as I had hoped to carry on where I left off last year," said Olic.
Olic scored 19 goals for Bayern last season.
Bayern coach Louis van Gaal already has attackers Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Miroslav Klose on the sidelines.
