Shanghai Jiao Tong University was one of the first national institutions of higher learning in China. It was established in 1896 as Nan Yang College and officially renamed in 1956. During the 1930s, the university gained a reputation of nurturing top engineers. Its alumni include many well-known scientists and professors. Students from the university have won top prizes in various competitions, such as the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, International Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Electronics Design Contests.
