Shaanxi Normal University is one of the key higher education institutions directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education. As an important center of training teachers for higher education establishments and middle schools, it is regarded as northwest China's "the cradle of teachers."
The universities predecessor was Shaanxi Provincial Teachers School, which was founded in 1944. Located in Xi'an, it has two campuses, Yanta and Chang'an, covering an area of 180 hectares.
The university's 21 colleges provide undergraduate education in 63 majors. The university also boasts 185 master's programs, 103 doctoral programs, and 12 postdoctoral research centers. Among all the 2,800 faculty members, 800 are associate professors or above. Currently, 17,495 undergraduate students, 7,595 postgraduate students, over 40,000 continuing and online education students, and 815 foreign students are studying at the university. To date, the university has trained nearly 130,000 graduates in a range of disciplines.
The university has established cooperative relations with more than 70 universities in countries as diverse as the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia, Japan, Australia, Canada and South Korea.
