Beijing Normal University is a renowned institution of higher learning. It places particular emphasis on teacher training, as well as basic learning in both the arts and sciences. The university's predecessor, the Normal College of the Imperial University of Peking, was founded in 1902.
Covering a total area of 69.85 hectares, the university offers 57 undergraduate programs, 166 master's programs and 111 doctoral programs in its 22 schools. It also has a teaching faculty, two departments and 24 research centers. Seventy-one percent of the university's 3,049 faculty members are associate professors or above. At present, 21,488 full-time students are enrolled at the university, including 1,804 long-term foreign students.
The university has signed cooperative agreements with nearly 300 universities and research institutes in more than 30 countries and regions, and established cooperative programs for exchange students with more than 20 universities in the US, UK, Japan, South Korea, and Canada. It has jointly established Confucius Institutes at the University of Manchester of the UK, the University of Oklahoma and San Francisco State University in the US and Dawson University and Sherbrooke University in Canada.
