Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), originally founded in 1896 as the Nan Yang Public School, was, by the 1920s, already regarded as one of China's best universities and was hailed as the "MIT of the East" due to its steady production of top engineering during the 1930s. The university's engineering department has exerted great influence on the country's social advancement and development. Its notable alumni include a great number of prominent figures in various fields, including Zhang Guangdou, the internationally renowned hydraulic engineering expert, Qian Xuesen, the prominent missile and space program scientist, and former Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
