The gross domestic product (GDP) of the top 10 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland in 2015 hit 43.3 trillion yuan (US$6.98 trillion), according to the annual economic reports released by local governments.

China's GDP reached 67.67 trillion yuan (US$10.91 trillion) in 2015, 6.9 percent higher than 2014 at comparable prices, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Guangdong, Jiangsu and Shandong cemented their spots as China's economic leaders for the seventh consecutive year, with Guangdong topping the list with 7.28 trillion yuan (US$1.17 trillion), an eight percent year-on-year increase.

Guangdong and Jiangsu are the only two provinces exceeding 7 trillion yuan (US$1.13 trillion).

A total of 25 out of the 31 provincial-level areas saw their GDP exceed 1 trillion yuan (US$161.29 billion), an increase of one from 2014.

Fujian ranked 11th in 2015 with 2.6 trillion yuan (US$419.35 billion), followed by Shanghai at 2.5 trillion yuan (US$403.23 billion) and Beijing at 2.3 trillion yuan (US$370.97 billion).

Only three areas registered double-digit growth - Chongqing, Tibet and Guizhou, at 11 percent, 11 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively.

A total of 24 regions saw their GDP grow by over seven percent, with Liaoning Province at the bottom with only three percent, the lowest for the past 23 years due to difficulties in investment and industries.

Areas with the lowest GDP include Tibet at 102.64 billion yuan (US$16.55 billion), Qinghai at 241.71 billion yuan (US$38.99 billion) and Ningxia at 291.18 billion yuan (US$46.96 billion).

China surpassed Japan as the world's second largest economy in 2010.
