- Guia Fortress and Lighthouse
Standing on the top of Guia Hill, the highest on Macao Peninsula, Guia Fortress provided some 300 years of military defense after it was built in 1622. The fort became a tourist resort after 1976 when the Portuguese army withdrew from Macao. Next to the fort stands Guia Lighthouse, the first such facility in China's coastal areas. Built in 1864, the lighthouse was originally illuminated by nothing more than a kerosene lamp. After it was renovated in 1910, the lighthouse adopted a modern lighting system, and its light can be seen as far away as 16 nautical miles on a clear night.
