The China Leiqiong Global Geopark, located about 15 kilometers west of Haikou, is named after a crater, one of many extinct volcanoes in Hainan.
It contains more than 40 "sleeping volcanoes" that were active in the Quaternary period during the Cenozoic Era and date back about 10,000 years ago.
The main venue here is the Mount Ma'anling Crater Scenic Area, consisting of two major volcanoes — Mount Fengluling and Mount Baoziling. Together, they form the shape of a saddle.
Walking along wooden planks, visitors can descend to the bottom of the collapsed cave of Mount Fengluling. In winter, one can feel warm wind blowing out from the cave, a reminder that this is a geothermal resource.
The park also boasts Haikou's highest point at 222.8 meters. Standing on top, visitors get a bird's-eye view of the city and the distant Leizhou Strait.
Opening hour: 8am-6pm
Address: Shishan Town, Xiuying District
Admission: 60 yuan
How to get there: A taxi ride to the park takes 30 minutes and costs about 40 yuan. The round-trip cost of a rental car to make the trip will set you back about 100 yuan.
