In 1993, the University of Mannheim in Germany created a ranking of the world's Top 500 supercomputers. Every two years, they evaluate the speed of the machines. Historically, the United States, Britain, France, Germany and Japan are traditional powers in the field, with the United States holding a distinct advantage. India and South Korea have also stepped up efforts to build a supercomputer. Recently, China entered the Top 500 list, even making the top ten.
