Heavy rain over the past few days in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, caused many underground car parks to flood. But over the weekend crews have been working hard to alleviate the problem.
No lights, no power, most residents have left the building. This is one of the areas hit hardest by a heavy rainstorm in Guangzhou. But things are now better than they were three days ago.
With the help of these bricks, we can finally get into one of the underground parking lots here in Guangzhou. Three days ago, this parking lot was totally submerged, and now you can see, after three days of effort by workers, the water is almost all gone.
A rescue worker said, "Now the remaining water is about ten centimeters deep. It is too shallow to be pumped by these big water pumps, so we need to use smaller ones. We've been working here since Friday, three whole days."
With more rainstorms on the way in the coming days, and maybe even more severe, staff from the community property management office are busy preparing for more floods.
Mr. Peng, staff of Community Property management Office, said, "We made these sandbags ourselves. We got two trucks of sand and used these bags, then piled them up here at the entrance of the parking lot. We hope this can prevent water from washing into the car park again. We didn't have as many sandbags as we do now, so last time, some sandbags were washed away. Also, we have six water pumps. If water floods in, we can pump it out. Other than this, we have no other way."
The team has been on the scene 24 hours a day since the garage was flooded. All cans are out, one of which is parked right on the road side. It didn't rain much last night, but this morning the city was hit by a short heavy shower. Luckily, there are no new water-logged places.
