The parents of a baby born at Women and Children's hospital in Dandong of Liaoning Province have quite a story to tell about her birth. She's as healthy and normal as average babies, but the circumstances of her arrival are anything but normal.
Liu Li finally smiled in relief after she saw her baby healthy and safe.
Hours before, Liu was stranded at home in rural Kuandian County hoping the mid-wives could reach her despite the heavy flooding.
Liu Li's Aunt said, "It rained overnight. When the day broke we found that all roads were inundated. We were trapped in flooding."
There are no medical facilities in the village and a distress call had been made to the outside. They never thought how far the message could reach.
Pan Wei, Captain pilot of Beihai 1st Rescue Flight Team, said, "We received a call from the Liaoning Provincial Governor. He said we must do everything we could to save the pregnant woman."
The Governor also ordered that experienced doctors go along on the chopper.
Despite severe flight conditions they reached Liu's home, which was surrounded by vast area of water.
Yu Xiaohong, Doctor of Dandong Women and Children's Hospital, said, "When we arrived, her water had been broken for 17 hours. There's a high risk of infection under such circumstance. So we decided to bring her to the hospital."
Liu was air-lifted to hospital for immediate treatment.
But she could not share the good news with her family as traffic and telecommunication services have not been fully restored.
Doctors at the hospital say Liu and her daughter are doing well and most of her hospital fees had been waived.
