It's been 15 months since Houston Rockets center Yao Ming last made an appearance on court in the NBA. Yao's recovery has been very slow and steady but he made it back onto court for 12 Minutes as the Rockets took on the Orlando Magic to open their pre-season.
Fans flocked to the arena to welcome their idol's return to court. Houston Rockets center Yao Ming was given a warm reception in Texas.
Yao's first encounter after recovery was Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard, a highly anticipated match-up. Yao played eight minutes in the first quarter and four in the second before sitting out the rest. He had three rebounds, one assist, hit three free throws and attempted just one shot.
Yao Ming, Houstion Rockets, said, "I'm happy to be back, I could run without pain now."
The 30-year-old seven-time All-Star considered the game was a good first step for him and that he will use the pre-season games to improve his form gradually.
The Rockets have said they will limit Yao's play this season. They will consult with doctors as the season progresses to see if he might be able to handle more. Houston are eager to have him back in any capacity after going 42-40 and missing the playoffs last season. Yao has averaged more than 19 points and nine rebounds since he was drafted first overall in 2002.
