On Wednesday the head of the Chinese delegation, Xie Zhenhua, met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The two sides exchanged views on important issues at the UN climate talks.
Xie says China has been actively facilitating the talks and hopes it can achieve positive and balanced results. He also says China and other Basic Nations including Brazil, South Africa and India have adopted flexible positions.
But so far, the Cancun talks haven't made any substantial progress on financial aid and technological transfer, and disagreements on the Kyoto Protocol still exist. Ban spoke highly of China's active involvement in the talks, and efforts to decrease emissions. He cited that China has cut one and a half billion tons of carbon emissions while keeping its economic development fast and stable.
Ban said he hopes some countries can change their attitudes to cooperate with others. He stressed it will be challenging to the UN multilateral mechanism if no achievements are made in Cancun.
