The explosions demolished at least six vehicles, and caused severe damage to many houses. The oil-rich province of Kirkuk, is part of an area claimed by Kurds, Arabs, and Turkmens.

It had been the center of the insurgency against the US-led invasion. While violence has declined sharply in Iraq, bombings and attacks are still a daily occurrence, ahead of the planned withdrawal of US troops.
