The US Open started today with 13th seed Peng Shuai of China taking on local player Varvara Lepchenko.
Peng Shuai has played well this season, posting a career best world ranking of 14. But she withdrew from the recent Texas Open through exhaustion before returning to the court last week and she's yet to return to form.
Peng Shuai made only four unforced errors in the match, but handed her opponent plenty of chances. Lepchenko, though, was not able to convert the opportunities into points. Peng Shuai needed an hour and a half to defeat the American local in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 and advance to the second round.
